Coordinator for Accessibility and Information for Disabled Students (AIDS)

Coordinator for Accessibility and Information for Disabled Students (AIDS)

The position of Accessibility and Information for Disabled Students (AIDS) Coordinator was first introduced in the University President’s Staff Meeting on July 2nd of 1980. By that time, the number of disabled students enrolled at TU was steadily growing “as a result of HEW Rules, nationwide acceptance of the 'mainstreaming' philosophy, and Towson State University’s good reputation and relationships with other agencies", leading to the need for additional staff.

The job description for this position dictates that the AIDS Coordinator would be responsible for oversight of services for disabled students and serve as a point of contact for faculty members and community organizations and agencies such as the Baltimore League for the Handicapped.

Come Fall of 1980, the position for the AIDS Coordinator had been established and filled, with the University Undergraduate Course Catalog instructing disabled students to contact the coordinator to receive assistance in obtaining special services.
